While I challenge anyone to have more contempt for Ndamkong Suh than myself, I keep wondering in the back of my mind if that contempt is at least partially fueled by the fact that he is an exceptional player to the detriment of a certain NFL team that plays its home games in the greatest city in the world (...Da Bears!) I really try to keep an open mind about it and evaluate in a fair manner.
This morning I caught a SportsCentury about Dick Butkus. Butkus did some bad things on the field of play and quickly gained a reputation similar to what Suh's is now. The story that really caught my attention was about a Detroit (Go Figure) Receiver who died on the field of play. I think it was a heart attack, but due to Butkus's reputation, Detroit fans assumed he had killed the guy.
I just wonder, should a similar situation happen now, how bad would Suh be crucified?

I actually remember watching that game. It was a clean hit, but it was one helluva hard hit. I don't recall Butkus ever stomping an opponent that was on the ground. I'm not saying he never did, I just don't remember it.
Please don't feed the psychos.

Different game today especially with all the rules in play to protect the players QB/WR/KR. Wilber Marshall and Otis Wilson were no saints either but thats how the game was played up thru the mid 90's. Big difference w/ Suh is he has been warned and fined numerous times early in his career. Dan Dierdorf bitches and calls guys dirty all the time but he was one of the dirtiest players I have ever seen play the game. Suh is and will be a dominant for years to come if he can keep himself between the lines. Frankly I don't see much of a difference, besides the play being whistled dead, between what Suh has done and the helmet to face hit James Harrison put on Colt McCoy last thursday. I think giving Harrison 1 game was not enough, he should have gotten 2 like Suh. The part that gets under my skin the most is the arrogance of both of them. I like a good hit as much maybe more than some but these guy have to understand the league is trying to protect everyone. I see some of these head to head hits today and think these guys don't care, it doesn't bother them to think about the rest of their lives, if they could end up another Dave Duerson. I don't think I ever saw Butkus stomp anyone either, but I did see him gingerly step on a few RB's and O linemen on the way back to the D huddle before... ...
