So with every team seemingly jumping into the Shark Pond, me thinks it is time to consider what he is worth.
He is a young pitcher (he will be 29 for all of the 2014 season, but is still young in pitchers years as he wasn't used as a starter until recently). He has 2 full years of control before free agency. I personally think that what the Cubs gave up for Garza a few years ago would be a great comparison. When comparing Matt Garza's 2 years leading up to his trade with Jeff's 2 years as a starter you can see why this is a great compare.
Garza: 64GS 3CG 1SHO 408IP 339SO/142BB WHIP 1.25 7.48K/9
Shark: 61GS 3CG 1SHO 388IP 394SO/134BB WHIP 1.29 9.14K/9
That 8 man trade obviously included a few filler pieces from each side but it really broke down to Matt Garza for Chris Archer, Hak-Ju Lee, & Brandon Guyer (With Sam Fuld & Robinson Chirinos being swapped for Fernando Perez & Zach Rosscup). While arguments can be made that adding additional pieces to Shark would increase his value I'm looking to figure his stand alone value.
Archer, Lee, & Guyer all ranked as top 10 cubs prospects at the time (depending on who's version you read Archer was ranked as high as number 1). Archer & Lee also have ranked highly in overall prospectdom since that time.
With this framework in place it let's take a look at what each team currently rumored to be interested in Shark and what they have to offer. I believe I have seen 4 teams connected with Garza by rumor: Dbacks, Nationals, Pirates, & The Blue Jays. Given the orgizational needs I would figure top priority would be Top level Pitching and catchers.
Dbacks have Archie Bradley or Tyler Skaggs that could headline, with maybe Stryker Trahan and David Holmberg
Pirates have Jameson Taillon (whom they probably wouldn't part) but I think Gregory Polanco Luis Heridia and Tyler Glasnow would be great. The Pirates have some interesting position players as well that could be re-traded if nothing else.
Nationals I would suggest Anthony Rendon and Lucas Giolito and either Robbie Ray or Matt Purke (both left handers)
And the Blue Jays would Probably Bring 1 of Aaron Sanchez, Roberto Osuna, or Marcus Stroman and Daniel Norris(LHP) & AJ Jimenez (Catcher)
All provide great partners for trade, and with more than one team vying the price is only going to go up.
