Today Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom today. We are all familiar with Mr. Banks contributions to our society, but let's take a look at who else is on the list:

Bill Clinton - 42nd US President

Richard Lugar- US Senator from Indiana

Sally Ride - 1st American Female astronaut to travel in space

Oprah Winfrey- television and philanthropist

and a host of other names. This is some very good company for our beloved Mr. Cub to be in.

Then there is probably one of the most important names of the 20th century on the list and I bet you haven't heard his story. His name is Mario Molina. Him and Sherwood Rowland's pioneering research into "hot atom" chemistry lead to the discovery of the effect that CFC's have on the atmosphere, which lead to the Montreal Protocol.

A fine day for Mr. Cub indeed.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors"

So I'm guessing being one of the first Negro League players in play in the MLB and being the first African American Chicago Cub, and a life's worth of work.

Oh, and you know the President is from Chicago and that probably helped.

Someone considers me a hippie.

I'm shocked.

And I revel in their jealousy.

NPR stated this morning that Ernie Banks played for the White Sox.

Where's that petition to cut their funding again?  I suspect a couple million North Siders would line up to sign after that gaff.

I saw Prairie Home Companion live while in High School.  Garrison Keillor wore a suit with the ugliest sneakers I'd ever seen in my life.
