So my brother and I decided that we're going to focus on the dark beer this Holiday.  Mostly because stouts go really well with whiskey, and, well, we'll be having a lot of that.

Thus far we've identified Guinness, Murphy's, North Coast's Old Rasputin (drool), Sammy Smith's Oatmeal Stout (my college beer of choice), Deschutes' Obsidian, and a couple of local brews.

Anyone else have any thoughts?  Ideally, we'd pick up a dozen different bombers (easier to sample/share -- though not necessarily cheaper -- than a slew of sixers), but tell me whatcha got.

Well any of the Founder's Breakfast Stouts should be included and Old Rasputin can't be ignored. Sammy Oaty was also one of my college brew and one of my earliest entries into the Stouting. Having a few Young's Double Chocolate would be nice to have around to sweeten the Stoutmas. One other Michigan stout everyone should try is New Holland's Dragon's Milk but I doubt it gets out to Cali.

It doesn't.  Nor does Founders.

And I'm sure you can get Parabola and I hope you've had plenty of it already.

It's nice to discuss beer on here again, I miss the days we'd go completely off track on the main page to talk beer.

If you're not including it among the unnamed locals, Barney Flats. That and Smith's Oatmeal are my all-time favorites.

Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout is currently out right now too... or it was the last time I was at my local shop. If you can stand InBev getting your money, people swear by that stuff.

My Ignore List:
Crockett, mountsalami, sans

Barney Flats, eh?  ::gulps down the last of his Hop Otin' IPA::  Yes, I've heard of that one.  And I'll add it to the list.

Is Goose Island 100% InBev?  Or did they hold on to a few things while selling everything else out to The Man?

There's something about bourbon stouts that doesn't jive with me.  I mean, I really really like bourbon.  And I really really like stout.  But ... I dunno.  Maybe it's too sweet?

MG: Parabola?  Never had it -- not sure I've ever seen it.  Who brews it?

Firestone Walker it's in Cali and it is one of the top BA rated beers http://beeradvocate....file/2210/41815 it's fantastic and since I think you're a fan of Russian Imperial Stout this should be on you list. 13% ABV of delight.

Ah, Firestone.  Yes, they're quite good.  I'll peep it out.

I've found that if a bourbon stout isn't brewed with a bitter like coffee it does become nearly syrupy. Founders CBS & KBS do this perfectly

As for Goose Island I know the brew pub still brews like they did before InBev, and I think these rare sought after brews have little to do with InBev put where the profits go I do not know.

Why does this not surprise me, but it is the best desert stout I've ever had. You should mix it in that Milkshake you love and create the new holiday drink.
