I DID THIS A WHILE BACK AND I WANTED TO UPDATE IT, TO INCLUDE THE NEW GUYS AND TO GIVE AN ESTIMATED LOOK AT WHERE THE CUBS SALARY IS. ARB NUMBERS ARE THE HARDEST PART TO GUAGE, AND WHAT THE NEW CBA DOES TO THE YEARS PRIOR TO ARB. WITH THAT IN MIND, THIS IS PRETTY CLOSE TO WHERE THE CUBS CURRENT BUDGET IS

GROUP1: GUARANTEED MONEY AND DEAD, DEAD WEIGHT

ALFONSO SORIANO 19 M
CARLOS ZAMBRANO 18 M
RYAN DEMPSTER 14 M
CARLOS MARMOL 7 M
MARLON BYRD 6.5 M
DAVID DEJESUS 4.25 M
JEFF SPELLCHECK(FORMER ND WR) 2.6 M
CARLOS SILVA( ARE U F'ING KIDDING) 2 M
TOTAL FOR GROUP 1 73.35

THE ARB BOYS '11 SAL estimated '12 SAL

MATT GARZA 5.95 M, 2012 est 8-10 M
GEO SOTO 3 M, 2012 est 4-5 M
IAN STEWART 2.3 M,2012 est 3-4 M
JEFF BAKER 1.175 M, 2012 est 1.5-3 M
RANDY WELLS .475 M, 2012 est .750-1 M
BLAKE DEWITT .460 M , 2012 est .750- 1 M
estimated total for group 2 19.6 M

THE CONTROLLABLE CHEAPIES(these salaries are a bit estimated..due to new CBA)

STARLIN CASTRO 475,000
TRAVIS WOOD 441,000
ANDREW CASHNER 450,000
JAMES RUSSELL 430,000
DARWIN BARNEY 430,000
TOTAL FOR GROUP 3 2.23 M

TOTAL FOR THE 3 GROUPS 18 PLAYERS WITH AN ESTIMATED SALARY OF 95.1 MILLION. EVEN IF MY ARB NUMBERS ARE LOW, YOU WOULD PROBABLY BE LOOKING AT ONLY 97 M OR SO.

CONSIDERING THAT 2011 SALARY WAS 135 MILLION....EVEN IF THE CUBS WENT TO A SALARY OF 125....THAT STILL LEAVES CLOSE TO 30 M....

BOTTOM LINE- ROOM FOR PRINCE(IF THEY CHOOSE), ROOM FOR GARZA EXTENSION...MUCH MORE FLEXIBILITY THAN MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE....

Chris the font that you used for the top part shows up a unreadable old English type font on iPad/iPhones.

I don't doubt that there is room for Prince and Garza, the problem is we would need Prince, Ramirez, Garza, Wilson, Darvish to reasonably compete this year. What I wouldn't mind seeing is signing Prince and heavily front loading his contract so that if you sign him to a 6-$155 by year 5 and 6 you have very minimal money and you hope like mad that he is still super-productive.
Or you run screaming from his body-type.

Peter Gammons just reported that Boras is considering a 3yr 26+ per yr deal Fielder so he will beat out Alberts annual value. So would the Cubs consider a 5yr deal for 26M+ per years.

I would think he'd either only go 3 years or 7+ years. 5 years would make him a free agent at 32, still looking for his big payday. And since most assume that's around the time his gut will make it past his knees, or his knees will simply say "screw this", I wouldn't think he'd be likely to get a Pujols like contract then.

Maybe 5 years with an player opt-out clause after 3?

I could even see 7 years with an opt-out after 3. I believe that's how CC's contract with the Yankees was structured.

I believe the $5 million still owed to Pena is going to count against the 2012 budget. I also believe Soriano is $18 million, not $19 million (Cot's has it as $18M on the site, and $19M on the spreadsheet - based on my memory of the deal when it was announced, the former is correct). Kerry Wood is probably going to get a couple million, and one of Corpas and Sonnanstine will probably make the roster at about $1 million.

they pay Pena in January so I wasn't sure how that worked.....

so subtract a million from Soriano, which means that would cancel out the Corpas/Sonnanstine derby

I read Wood wants somewhere in the vicinity of 2.5-3.5 million

even if you count the Pena money....factoring possible moves of Marmol 7, Byrd 6.5...they will still be in much better shape than they have been

still probably won't sign Fielder...

The question that I raise is this- did they lose money last season? I don't know if their finances are public at all, but I'd be willing to bet that they might have. Other teams with similar payrolls and attendance have much, much better TV contracts, with the horrible WGN contract right now making the Cubs a bit more small market than it would appear. And didn't Ricketts also take out substantial loans? I'd be willing to bet that the payroll ends up less than last season, by a bit.

I think payroll will be down but not because they lost money. I believe they are going to spend money on international signings if they can, if not, they're going to save money for 2013 and on when getting a FA or two could make the difference.

MB, I agree completely. I think they are in stockpile mode for the foreseeable future. I will be patient and still cheer them on. We've been through much, much worse as fans.
