Brett discussed the merits vs. uselessness of the Cubs pursuing the recently waived Emilio Bonifacio...how bad it has gotten that I am making a case for the pick up? Lets compare him with the assumed starter at 2B Darwin Barney. (with my luck Bonifacio will be signed by the Dodgers by the time I complete this) As fun as it might be to see them duke it out in a steel cage match...here are some comps
AGE- Barney 29 in November, Bonifacio 29 in April...wash
BATS-Barney right, Bonifacio switch...advantage Emilio
DEFENSE AT 2B- By all measurables, Barney is superior...but Emilio isn't awful...advantage Barney.
VERSATILITY- Bonifacio has played every postion except pitcher and catcher...advantage Emilio.
OFFENSE- Barney OPS Career, 2013, & OPS + = .628, .569 and 71. Bonifacio .662, .625 and 79...slight advantage Emilio.
SALARY- Barney makes 1.2 million less
SPEED- huge advantage here to Bonifacio...
With his elite speed and versatility I see Bonifacio as a perfect fit to man 2B, and in a perfect world spell Alcantara as he wins the job out of spring training! (I can hope) Also selfishly, and non-Saber-y, I like SB guys in the line-up.
I just really want to have something to be a little excited about...
I just bet Bonifacio signed with someone else already
