In October 2009 the Cubs were purchased by the Ricketts Family and were under new ownership. After over 25 years of the Tribune ownership Wrigley field and the rest of the organization were left in the stone age. Facilities deteriorating, a serious lack of staff, majorly lagging behind in technology and deficiency in many other parts of the organization lead to new ownership deciding it was time for a rebuild.
It is now 2014 and every fan has their opinion on how the rebuild is going. It seems to me that those opinions can be lumped into three categories. Each of these categories are filled by die hard Cub fans who love the Cubs equally. They just see things differently. Those three categories will be represented by the Three Little Pigs.
The Little Pig who built his house made out of straw:
These are the fans who think that new ownership can spend their way to the promise land and are wondering why the Cubs aren't there yet. These fans think every free agent should of been signed because that is the only way to win. Just have the FA name their price. The rooftops should just be bought up because the Ricketts have money coming out of their ears! They also believe that the Ricketts are funneling the money not spent on the MLB team into their pockets. Backing up to the hopper if you would. The Cubs success or lack there of directly affects personal relationships.
The Little Pig who built his house made out of sticks:
These are the fans who want to see the farm system improve and also want to sign every "top" free agent. They don't care to much about the Wrigley renovation because they like to remember Wrigley as the museum that it is. They are happy with the improvement in the farm system but are a little impatient with the timeline of some of the prospects arrival at Wrigley. They feel the FO is incompetent when it comes to negotiating with "top" free agents. They also feel that the FO is just a mouth piece for the greedy owners. The Cubs success or lack there of doesn't really affect their personal relationships. Just don't have a discussion about the Cubs when they been drinking or when the Cubs are loosing.
The Little Pig who built his house made out of bricks:
These are the fans who look at the whole organization when it comes to the rebuild and not just the number of wins and losses at Wrigley. They would like to see the renovation at Wrigley go as well as it could for both the Cubs and Wrigleyville. They are satisfied with what has happened with regards to new facilities being built, new staff being added and catching up in the technology department. They are optimistic about the wave of prospects in the farm system. They also understand how a completed Wrigley renovation and up coming TV deal will affect how money will be spent. They are patient with the rebuild because they have endured countless bad seasons and take comfort knowing the Cubs are building a brick house. The Cubs success or lack there of doesn't affect their personal relationships. They can take a ribbing from other fan bases with a smile on their face. They will always enjoy the Cubs because as a wise man once said "it's just a game and we aren't even playing"
So which Cubs fan are you?
