There are certain platitudes that athletes use frequently to describe the things they’re going to do with respect to their game.
“We’re gonna play hard.”
“We’re gonna focus.”
“We’re not gonna quit.”
“We’re gonna eat some gummy bears.”
…
About that last one. I am not familiar with that as an expression of eagerness to compete, but Houston Astros outfielder Colby Rasmus dropped it in an interview with Evan Drellich in that kind of context and I kind of love it.
“My eyes, what I’m seeing right now is, I’m seeing red,” Rasmus told Drellich after arriving early to Spring Training. “I’m ready to go out there and beat some folks, win some ballgames, chest-bump with these guys, and eat some gummy bears. You know what I’m saying?”
I really don’t know what he’s saying, but I’m totally going to start using it.
Got a 4,000-word article to write? “I’m gonna eat some gummy bears!”
Wife wants me to mow the lawn? “I’m gonna get out there and eat some gummy bears!”
Bought a 72oz monster bag of gummy bears that needs eating? “I’m gonna eat some gummy bears!”
