A little tardy on this one, but as reported in the comments, the corresponding move for the Bobby Howry signing was the option of Justin Berg back to AAA Iowa. Berg earned the demotion after he failed to keep his ERA under 6.00 and his WHIP under 1.60, each of which – even in this atrocious bullpen – were simply not good enough.
Of course, Bobby Howry’s ERA on the year is north of 10, but whateves.
To open up a spot on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designed pitcher David Patton for assignment. You may recall David Patton from such roster stashes as last year, when the Cubs selected him the Rule 5 Draft, and promptly suffered through his horribleness for a few weeks before benching him for the precise number of games necessary to be able to keep him. Glad they went through all that trouble, eh?
I’ll admit that my knowledge of minor league transactions is a little fuzzy – when a minor leaguer gets DFA’d, is he subjected to waivers? – but it seems like Patton may very well stay in the Cubs’ system.
