Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry is traveling with the team in Houston, and he won’t be alone this weekend – managerial candidate Bob Melvin is there, and expected to get his interview.
Melvin is highly regarded by Hendry, who interviewed him in the fall of 2002, when he hired Dusty Baker to manage the Cubs.
In seven seasons as a big-league manager, with Seattle and Arizona, Melvin compiled a record of 493-508. His 2007 Arizona club swept the Cubs out of the National League division series. Daily Herald.
Melvin and Eric Wedge appear to be the two most legitimate big-league-experience types on Hendry’s list, but Mike Quade and Ryne Sandberg remain the favorites (together with long shot Joe Girardi).
