The conversation about "deserving" a champion was thought provoking for me.
Do the Cubs DESERVE a championship? Do the fans? How about specific individuals? What do we, as fans, DESERVE in general.
I was particularly moved by the posters that wanted a championship in their dads' lifetime. Think about that.....There isn't one among us that has ever experienced a Cubs championship...not one. And our parent fans have waited even longer. Does time make someone more deserving?
For perspective: When I was considerably younger, I went to church with a man named Wellington Merritt. His nickname was "Gabby". He got that moniker because you couldn't stop him from talking about his beloved Cubs. He always wore a nice suit, trenchcoat (in the winter) and a wool Chicago Cubs baseball cap - everyday and everywhere he went. He was a young boy in Chicago when the Cubs last won the World Series. He could tell you about the 1910, '18, '35, and '45 series and make you feel like you were there..........he would also explain how player x cost a particular game......as if it happened yesterday. He was a walking and (obviously) talking encyclopedia and marketing agent for everything Cubs. If anyone deserved to see a world championship, it was Gabby.
God, I feel so inadequate as a Cubs fan now.
So what about us? What do we deserve?
verb (used with object)
to merit, be qualified for, or have a claim to (reward, assistance, punishment, etc.) because of actions, qualities,or situation:
to deserve exile; to deserve charity; a theory that deserves consideration.
Based on the above definition:
I don't think we merit a champion (yet); we certainly aren't qualified to be champions (yet), and; we certainly don't have "a claim to" anything (unless you want to include the "punishment" example in the definition).
There is an argument to be made that the we fans deserve a little something for the time investment (a century+ should get some consideration)...but I refer you back to the previous paragraph regarding punishment.
I was always taught that we get a little bit of what we hope for; most of what we pray for, and; everything we deserve.
As a 40+ year die-hard fan. I don't feel like I deserve to see a championship. But I can certainly want that for others. I will, like I do every spring and summer, hope and pray for my Cubs. If they eventually succeed, then it will be because they deserved it....not me.
So who really deserves a Cubs championship? The Chicago Cubs....... when they merit it. We will just be along for the ride.
I just wait for the day when we are arguing about "expecting" a championship instead of whether or not we "deserve" one. I might have to channel Gabby for that conversation!
