Let's imagine the season started today, and, further, that Jeff Samardzija had a modestly successful Spring as a starting pitcher.

With Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Paul Maholm, Travis Wood, Chris Volstad, Randy Wells and Jeff Samardzija available as starters, which five get the call, in which order, and which two get sent to the pen?

Samardzjia probably has more upside than all but Garza, due to his velocity being a tick higher than the other guys......so if he has a decent spring he has to be in there....Dempster, Garza, in as long as they are on the team obvioulsy...Wood over Volstad in my opinion....Maholm is a lock..so in a rambling way...if Samardzjia does have a good spring
1. Garza 2. Dempster 3. Wood 4. Samardzjia 5. Maholm 6. Volstad 7. Wells......

I do see a trade of some kind if these guys are all looking decent in the spring....

Without a trade here's what I see:

1-Garza
2-T Wood
3-Dempster
4-Maholm
5-Volstad

I think the rest are in the pen or reassigned

But here what I think the FO wants

1- T Wood
2- Dempster
3- Maholm
4- Volstad
5- Samj (I got to learn to spell his name)

I think Wells and Garza will be traded

Man that's tough, but I think I'll go:
1. Garza
2. Dempster
3. Wood
4. Maholm
5. Volstad

with Shark and Wells out of the pen. I'd like to see Shark get a chance, but it just doesn't look like the numbers game is going to work out for him. I'm hoping for a Garza trade to open up a spot for him, but until then, he's a proven bullpen arm, and the least proven SP.

Ranking by potential this season:

1. Garza - Duh
2. Samardjiza - I wouldn't mind him starting the season in AAA if they're dedicated to making him a starter in order to stretch him out. Plenty of middle relief options out there.
3. Wood - Haven't checked his IP hopefully Dusty didn't abuse him
4. Dempster - I'd give him the opening day start since he's been such a good teammate.
5. Maholm - Not bad at all for a #5 guy

Use Wells as a Long Reliever/Spot Starter in case of mild injury/suspension/double header or just to give Samardjiza an extra day of rest and to keep those extra innings off his arm. Volstad goes to AAA as the first option if somebody goes down long-term or completely sucks. Better him than Coleman. This is a good problem to have! Much better than last year.

Can Volstad still be sent to AAA without going to waviers?

Garza dempster wood Samardhija maholm. But what if garza gets traded and we get a good pitcher ie. turner. Does he start right away or does go to triple a?

I should say this is what I think will happen, not necessarily what I want to happen.

Yeah I don't want Samarja (I like phonics) anywhere near my rotation if I'm the Cubs. He still doesn't have a 3rd pitch, below average control, etc. He's just a bullpen burner if he's a starter.

I'd probably go:

Garza
Dempster
Wood
Volstad
Maholm

With Wells and Samardzija in the pen, though it's a really tough call. Volstad, I believe, has options left, so he could theoretically go to Iowa. Ditto Wood, but I doubt that would happen. Wells, I think has an option year left, too, so even he could go to Iowa for a while.
