Carlos Marmol closed out the season – as he did so many games – with dominance and flair, emerging as MLB’s reliever of the month for September. He set a record or two on the way, too.
Marmol’s flat out dominance in the month of September earned him Major League Baseball’s Delivery Man of the Month Award for September, the league announced on Monday.
Statiscally, Marmol was flawless. The 27-year-old right-hander recorded a save in each of his 13 opportunities this month, without allowing a run.
His accomplishments in September also capped off a record-breaking year. Marmol’s three strikeouts on Sept. 25 against the Cardinals gave him 131 for the season, passing Bruce Sutter for the Cubs’ single-season record. Marmol finished the season with 138 K’s in 77 2/3 innings, which also established a Major League record with 15.99 strikeouts per nine innings. cubs.com.
Carlos Marmol’s September stands as perhaps the best single month for a Chicago Cubs reliever ever. He’ll be eligible for arbitration for the second time this winter, and will make a heck of a lot more than the $2.125 million he made this year, almost certainly exceeding $4 million.
