My son is enjoying his first day off of "ski week", a concept that both troubles and confuses me a bit, especially considering his spring break is only five weeks away.

It's all about winter tourism, years ago the ski lodges and and their lobby argued for a mid-winter holiday to help support the winter destinations. They saw the profits beach resorts got from Spring Break and wanted a piece of the action.

Well, I think it's a regional thing, too. Ski Week has been a California entrenchment for a long, long time, especially with Tahoe only three hours away. In Chicago, where skiing is a foreign concept, and the resorts fewer and farther, there's much less emphasis on it.

I'm working today, but all the government offices and schools are closed. That makes it difficult for a reporter who covers government and school primarily.
