When the Super Bowl LIII logo was revealed a while back, the NFL took some heat for being too bland – and I totally agree. What used to be a more creative and unusual representation of (one of) the world’s biggest sporting events has increasingly become a cookie-cutter, corporate-looking safe play without any imagination and individuality. But then again, the NFL is not alone in that.
Across all sports – and even other industries – the more lively spirit of the 80s and 90s has been crushed by a dive to the safer and more conservative center in an effort to widen the appeal. But lost in that effort is, you know, something interesting. And that brings me to MLB.
Here's a #TBT to some of the weirdest team logos (and mascot) in @MLB history.https://t.co/cdSjqNAOW7 pic.twitter.com/ijysSc2Fx1

Over at Cut4, Chris Landers has compiled some of the weirdest MLB team logos from across the decades, and I can’t help but pine after some of the lost creativity.
I mean, check out the Athletics alternate logo from 1999:
Or how about the Mariners from 1977-1980:
The Rangers from 1972-1980 is absolutely awesome:
The Mets late-90s logo is weird, but again, that’s why not:
And there’s so many more awesome ones than that. So head over to Cut4 and scroll through some of the brilliance. Maybe, someday, MLB will let that creativity spill back into the sport – I think it would be a hit.
