Fox Moves On From Replay, 49ers Trade Impacts Bears, White’s Possible Return, and Other Bullets

The first half didn’t end the way the Chicago Bears wanted it to, but at least they were able to put the loss behind them and celebrate Halloween in style:

  • Zach Miller has been top-of-the-mind for the Bears since the end of Sunday’s game, writes Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly, and that’s very much understandable. The Bears are fortunate to be on bye this week, which will allow players to move on from the situation at their own pace and without rushing into creating and executing a game plan for week ten. Eventually, the Bears will move on and turn their attention to their final eight games of the season; however, I can understand how and why Miller’s injury and health status lingers in the minds of many.
  • For what it’s worth, Fox says he hadn’t seen the video released by the NFL explaining why Miller’s 25-yard touchdown catch was overturned. Frankly, the Bears’ head coach has moved on. It sounds like he knows he fighting a losing battle, which is unfortunate after watching him step to the plate and battle on behalf of his player.
  • Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times is the latest to opine that it’s time for the NFL to simplify its catch rules. Catch-no catch has been one of the longest-standing battles in league history, and the fact that it’s not getting any clearer despite advanced minds and top-notch technology remains a concern. Every year the league goes into a bunker in search of clarity, but like clock-work, a new catch-no catch controversy pops up every time a new football season rolls around.
  • While the Bears have not ruled out the possibility of bringing back Kevin White from injured reserve, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times writes the discussions haven’t been all that serious. White suffered a shoulder injury in the team’s season-opening loss against the Atlanta Falcons and has been unavailable for 35 of the 40 games that have been played since the Bears drafted him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. To be fair, it would be nice to see White work his way back into game shape and back on the field, as it would be a story of perseverance from a player who has worked his way back from two season-ending injuries already. It would also be interesting to see White work with Mitch Trubisky, too, who has struggled to connect with his receivers. And while it doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards this season, there’s nothing wrong with rooting for a good story.
  • At least Trubisky will soon have Dontrelle Inman on the field working with him and the offense. Here is a peek at what Inman can do once he gets a grasp of the Bears’ offensive playbook:
  • The latest in Dan Wiederer’s Chicago Hope series in the Chicago Tribune chronicling Mitch Trubisky’s rookie season takes us inside Trubisky’s up-close look at Drew Brees, a quarterback Trubisky idolized growing up and one whose path to stardom Bears fans hope he follows. Despite GM Ryan Pace (who holds Brees as his gold standard of quarterbacks) declining an interview for this piece, Wiederer takes a deep dive with some intriguing perspective from Brees, former teammate Lance Moore, Saints head coach Sean Payton, and others.
  • Over at The Athletic, Jon Greenberg weighs in on the brutal nature of the sport – which has been under the spotlight because of injuries to Miller and Jerrell Freeman. While there has been much focus on Miller’s injury (and rightfully so) we can’t overlook Freeman’s confession that he has been suffering post-concussion symptoms, which led him to take the medication that caused him to flunk a test for which he will serve a 10-game PED suspension. The Bears are obviously disappointed in Freeman’s second suspension in as many years, but sometimes things are bigger than football.
  • The trade consummated by the 49ers and Patriots to send quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to San Francisco impacts the Bears after all. Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago notes the local product from nearby Rolling Meadows will get a chance to face the Bears in December at Soldier Field. Hopefully, you’ve marked your calendars for the noon start on Sunday, December 3. As of now, the game is scheduled to be played on CBS, but could be eligible to be flexed over to FOX.
