Mitch Trubisky didn’t debut until Week 5 and has thrown just 48 passes in three games, but a lack of production – and chances to produce – have yet to squash his popularity.
Indeed, through the first six weeks of the season, Trubisky has the third highest-selling rookie jersey according to NFLShop.com. The only rookies who have higher selling jerseys are Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt, while running backs Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs and Christian McCaffery of the Carolina Panthers round out the top five. Some familiar faces are littered among the top-10, including Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook and New York Jets safety Jamal Adams – who, if you’ll recall, was a rumored draft target most of the offseason.
This isn’t Trubisky’s first appearance on a best-seller’s list though. The NFLPA released a list of the players whose jersey sales were on the rise, and that included Trubisky at 25th. And that’s despite his status as a rookie who hadn’t taken a meaningful snap and a draft pick that received a fair amount of blow-back from fans over the cost of the acquisition. In any case, that momentum carried into August, where Trubisky’s jersey was one of the hottest sellers.
Despite a subpar showing on the stat sheet, Trubisky’s popularity seems to growing – and will only continue to do so if the Bears keep winning games.
