Bears Scare At Fright Fest, Cleats for Charity, How Inman Could’ve Helped and Other Bullets

I hope the Chicago Bears’ defense is as scary today as they looked here:

  • Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune notes the last time the Bears were .500, cornerback Kyle Fuller was six weeks into his rookie season back in 2014. Things have changed for the Bears since then, to say the least. Fuller’s head coach is currently leading the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, while his defensive coordinator is now coaching up the defensive side of the ball for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Fuller is playing his best ball since his rookie season, when he came up with three interceptions in six games. Fuller has played more than 90 percent of the team’s defensive snaps and hasn’t had any health setbacks one year after missing the entire 2016 season with a troublesome knee injury
  • A win on Sunday would send the Bears to .500 and put the team in a position to dream the biggest dreams regarding its second half, writes JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago. Remember how difficult that first-half schedule looked prior to the start of the regular season? To come out 4-4 after facing a schedule where seven of the eight teams were above .500 is no small order. That would lead the Bears into an off week to get healthy before a second half where the Bears can make up some games in the division against the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions – twice.
  • Listen to right guard Kyle Long talk about how important this Week 8 game is:
  • Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune has a full list of the 32 Bears players will take part in the NFL’s “My Cleats, My Cause” initiative in 2017. The Bears will wear those special cleats in Week 13 at home against the San Francisco 49ers. As a point of comparison, only four Bears players wore special cleats during the event last year.
  • It’s a shame Dontrelle Inman won’t play (he’s a healthy scratch on this week’s list of inactives) because Kevin Patra of NFL.com believes his presence should help everyone on the offensive side of the ball. After a breakout 2016 season, Inman was buried on the Los Angeles Chargers’ depth chart with the healthy return of Keenan Allen. Depending on how quickly Inman learns the system, he could soon turn into Mitch Trubisky’s top target.
  • On the other side of the field, Patra writes about Marshon Lattimore having his eyes on being an impact corner in the mold of Darrelle Revis. Lattimore, who was once believed to be in the mix of players the Bears would consider taking with the third overall pick, is Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded cornerback and has played shutdown defense on the outside. The Ohio State product is a primary reason for the Saints’ improvement on defense.
  • Martellus Bennett signed a three-year deal with the Green Bay Packers in the offseason, but NFL.com’s Nick Shook writes the standout tight end could cut his own NFL career short:
