Was he driving on the wrong side of the road?

Was he driving on the wrong side of the road?

I thought about that but the accident must be minor because Luke has said all standard police work was done and I assumed that means calling the hospitals.

You're almost there. I defined the area in which the manhunt took place. That's where a map might come in handy. You don't need to worry about specifics, so long as you know the rough geography of that area and where cities are in relation to each other.

I'm still unsure what was in the wallet that caused the detective to make the connection. I maybe the detective and wallet are just a red herring and the smile answer is the man went the wrong way and got in an accident outside of the search area. If this is true then- lame. I want Ozzie Gullien going up in space.

The wallet probably contained an ID of some sort showing he was from England. Maybe there was evidence of dementia, like the ID specifically stated he was not allowed to drive. Not sure what info is on English ID's.

Was the car he was driving rented?

Maybe he was in an accident and couldn't remember his name and since he had no wallet, he couldn't be identified.

And there it is. Katie pretty much has it.

The missing tourist was an elderly English man who did have some mild Alzheimer's /mild dementia type symptoms, but not severe enough to be readily obvious (remember, he seemed normal in the bar).

And he did get confused when leaving Daytona Beach and drove north, not south (which is easy enough to do in any strange area, especially a foreign country).

At some point, he got further confused and wound up driving on the wrong side of the road, which of course led to an accident. He was still alive but unconscious after the accident, but without an ID (his wallet was left in the bar), the local police could not ID him.

The detective, when he arrived at work, heard the story, and saw the wallet, reasoned like this:
- If the man had not been found between Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach, then he probably isn't there.
- If he is old and forgot his wallet, there is reason to think he could become easily confused.
- Being British, if he is easily confused, there is a decent chance he drove on the wrong side of the road and had a wreck.

So where would a confused tourist wind up if he was trying to go south down the coast? North up the coast. After all, you'd have to be really confused to lose track of the ocean.

The detective made one phone call - to the police jurisdiction NORTH of Daytona Beach (the entire manhunt had been to the south). He asked if they had any unidentified elderly men who had been in an accident, possibly as the result of driving on the wrong side of the road. The answer was yes, and he was provided with the hospital in which the man was being treated. From there, all he had to do was drive up to the hospital and ID the man (which was easy, thanks to the ID cards in the wallet).

Um I do get some credit with the north vs south issue. I guess I was just looking for the absurd all day like going I to space, having a twin, being related to the detective. I guess the simple answers make the most sense but I like the absurd in most stories and logic puzzles.

We should make this a weekly thing very fun way to waste a afternoon at work.

Thanks for the entertainment Luke, tomorrow is shorter day but I'll be bored for a few hours.

That was a good, but tough one. Luke gave us the 'ole rope-a-dope by initially suggesting that it was easy...
