Mather vs. everyone else

I have been listening to MLB Network on Sirius the last few weeks and it just seems that with guys who have made the team, they are working on so many specific things that they may have a terrible start or they may have an 0-fer day but if a pitcher is solely working on a new delivery tweak, or a new grip or a specific pitch, of course he is going to get pounded. If a batter is going up there looking to drive the ball a certain way or is looking for a specific pitch in a specific location to drive, then it is very possible he will have a bad outing.
I guess I have just heard from too many former players on the radio that there is a chasm between your approach in spring training when established versus when fighting for a spot. Hell, Garza got LIT UP all of last preseason and the boo-birds were pouncing. I guess this is where there the critical junction between new and old schools (stats and scouting) is.

With Campy and Mather, neither has much major league pedigree, therefore you don't have much else besides ST to judge by.
The only way that couldn't be true IMO is that Tony would have had a job coming into ST, not an open competition. Sveum, Theo, Jed & Co. can't expect to challenge players and call this an open competition and not give it to the most deserving guy, who is without a doubt Mather in this situation.
