non-prospect question: did you go to college in the U-Maryland system? I found out I can get free grad school after my Dad teaches another year at the pharmacy school. I was just wondering what it's like.

Nope.

I did my undergrad work at U of E in Evansville, IN and went to Vanderbilt for grad school.

Maryland is well thought of locally, though. As are both John Hopkins and Towson (except in basketball).

Univ of Evansville? Isn't that where Donnie Baseball (Don Mattingly) went?

Is Vitters defense getting better? Could he be called up to play third? Do you think they’re waiting for a trade to open up a spot on the roster? Any help would be greatly apreciated.

He grew up and played for Reitz High School in Evansville. He was offered a scholarship to Indiana State but decided to go to the Yankees instead.

One of the Benes brothers came out of UE, though.

His defense is getting better, but he's got a ways to go yet. I think he'll come up September and will probably be given a chance to compete for a job in spring training, but I think he winds up back in Iowa for a few more months.

Unless he's traded.

Luke,

Any news on Dillon Maples? Haven't heard anything on him in awhile.

I think Rusin could pitch in the majors. I don't think he would be much more than an innings eater though. He's another one of those crafty left handers, and I think we have enough of them.

So far as I know, he's still expected to pitch soon.

Maples is supposed to pitch 7/29 for the AZL Cubs. He's been working out with the team in Mesa. He's likely to go 1 inning.

Luke/Brett,

What do you think the ceiling is for Dustin Geiger? I went to a few Chiefs games and he quickly became my favorite player, he interacted with the fans and seemed to enjoy himself on the field (plus he hit a monster home run). He is a big kid, seemingly with a decent bat but I definitely could see concerns with his fielding. Is he a person who projects to make the majors or at all or more of a career minor league type person?

He's got potential, but we don't have a lot of data on him. As a third baseman he is definitely behind Baez, Lake, Vitters, and Candelario, but he has drawn some attention as a prospect despite that.

I think we should see how he handles higher level pitching before we project him too far, but he has shown me enough to keep a close watch on him.

Just heard at the AZL game last night that Pierce Johnson will not pitch until the Instructional League. Maybe old news, but it was news to me.

News to me too. I was starting to wonder when we would see him pitch. Thanks for the update.
