All this talk about Bryan LaHair got me thinking this morning...we Cub fans have had to deal with numerous hyped up prospects....most turn out to be crap...hence my new word "crype"...so if you guys don't mind I will post a player by player update of the Cubs all-time crype team...hyped players who turned out to be crap....position by position...(I even had a nice picture of this fella's baseball card but am not technically advanced to post it)..todays player:

SECOND BASE- TY GRIFFIN

This can't miss prospect was drafted by the Cubs in the 1st Round(#9 overall) in 1988..after being a star at Georgia Tech and hitting a game winning homerun in the College W.S.(with an aluminum bat I might add, which still bothers me) he was massively hyped as a five-tool stud. I even suckered someone in my fantasy baseball league at the time to trade for this "future star". He even got a Topps 1989 rookie card.

However Ty didn't even come close, he played 9 minor league seasons compiling a lovely .257 career avg.....he struck out alot(we like that in our prospects)..he was fast...but couldn't hit with a wooden bat

OTHERS DRAFTED IN 1988(AFTER TY)- Robin Ventura, Tino Martinez, Jim Edmonds, Marquis Grissom, Kenny Lofton

I remember trading my friends for 3 or 4 of these cards, 'cause I was sure that they were gonna be worth $$hundreds$$ one day.

Gary ***f-in*** Scott!

From Wikipedia

In each season, he was the Opening Day third baseman for the Chicago Cubs, but in each case he was back in the minor leagues within a few weeks. In 1991, he batted .165 until May 14, when the Cubs sent him down. On April 20, 1992 he was batting .103 when he managed to crack a grand slam at Wrigley Field. He was then sent down 3 games later. He was called up a few more times during that year but never reached the majors again.
He bounced around the minor leagues until 1996 before retiring.

I LOVE that he is a "TOP PROSPECT"

You could also thrown in several of the outfielders that were pretty much "1 and done" J.Walton, D. Smith, Pie, Patterson, Brant Brown..etc.

Awesome! Make sure you note how "gritty" they are, how they have a great "motor" and how they "aren't very good but are white so let's just give them a word to describe how white they are".

Mike Harkey and Shawn Boskie are competing for the spot as staff ace, right?
