New Look Bears, Acho’s Meeting with McCaskey, Bears Reunion on South Beach, and Other Bullets

So that’s what it’s going to look like when Allen Robinson puts on a Bears uniform:

I can dig it.

  • Let’s get the hype train rolling, shall we? Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly writes the Bears are “easily” the NFC North’s most improved team after their free agency binge. Considering where the Bears started, there isn’t much of an argument against Arkush’s stance. GM Ryan Pace added a No. 1 receiver as part of a string of moves that added three new pass catchers and a backup quarterback who is also expected to play the role of playbook translator and quarterback whisperer. Everything done so far has been to the benefit of Mitch Trubisky, and we can’t wait to see him start slinging it again.
  • To be fair, it’s waaaaaay too early to be rewarding an offseason champion. And it doesn’t come with a trophy, parade, or a cool commemorative t-shirt. But at least the feelings are good and that counts for something, even if it’s not something that’s material.
  • ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson looks at the Bears’ receiver depth chart looks now that the team has Robinson and Taylor Gabriel in the fold. The upgrades are evident and the talent floor has definitely been raised now that Robinson and Gabriel can be placed at the top of their position group. This potential dynamic duo are legitimate targets Trubisky can rely upon and throw to in hopes of making plays down the field – something the team didn’t do much of in 2017.
  • Mark Grote of 670 The Score is transitioning from the Cubs beat to cover the Bears, so perhaps he can bring a little bit of that Wrigley Field magic to Soldier Field:
  • For what it’s worth, Grote’s first year with the Cubs on 670 featured the team hiring a new manager and adding a splash free agent signing. The Bears hired their new coach earlier this offseason and just completed a slew of splash signings. Super Bears, Super Bowl? I’m in.
  • A fun nugget from Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune, who provides a different angle on Sam Acho’s re-signing. As it turns out, Acho was visiting a prison with Bears President George McCaskey when his agent contacted him with a contract offer from the Bears. Wait what? Hang with me here. Kane reports Acho and McCaskey were touring the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, La., where they were discussing prison. Acho is one of the most active Bears in the community and has interests outside of football. But being in the biggest boss’ presence while your agent is fielding offers is … different, to say the least.

  • For your viewing pleasure, some highlights from Acho:
  • Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune examines what could be coming down the line for the Bears this offseason. The first wave of free agency featured splash signings that filled prominent needs with big cap spending. For the next wave, the Bears could target some depth additions and players who could create competition for bigger roles in 2018. As it stands, the Bears still have some pretty big needs. Chicago should prioritize filling holes among the edge defenders, inside linebacker, reserves in the secondary, and along the offensive line.
  • The Bears are still looking for a punter after the Bengals re-signed Kevin Huber to a three-year contract on Wednesday. Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports the Bears made a “strong push” to get Huber to take his talents to Chicago, but he’ll remain in Cincinnati. Huber was a Pro Bowler and named a first-team member of the Sporting News’ All-Pro squad. The Bears could still bring back Pat O’Donnell, but their pursuit of Huber suggests the team will explore outside options first.
  • A Bears reunion party is about to go down on South Beach. Guard Josh Sitton is signing a two-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. In Miami, he will be reunited with former offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, who is working with his former boss Adam Gase. Fitting enough, both worked under John Fox while in Chicago. As for Sitton, he was a Pro Bowler in 2016 and Pro Football Focus graded him as the team’s highest-graded offensive lineman in 2017. But after missing just two games while with the Packers from 2009-15, injuries have forced Sitton to miss six games in the last two years. The Bears decided not to pick up the third-year option on Sitton, clearing $8 million in cap space and positioning the team to get younger at the line of scrimmage.
