Allen Robinson Wants to Make Life Easy for Mitch Trubisky and Other Bullets

I got Allen Robinson on the mind …

  • The team’s newest No. 1 receiver, Robinson, says one of his primary goals this season is to make things easy for quarterback Mitch Trubisky. “I know from my standpoint, I’ll be able to make his job easy,” Robinson said, via ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson. “That’s my goal. Again, that’s what I came here for. I came here to make those plays, to make those catches, to make his job easy.” Well, isn’t that thoughtful?
  • For what it’s worth, Robinson has a knack for doing just that. Just look at what he did for Blake Bortles, who had a 99.9 passer rating when throwing to Robinson during his breakout 2015 season. You could even go back to college, where Robinson helped Christian Hackenberg throw for 2,955 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions as a freshman at Penn State. Robinson put up HUGE numbers for the Nittany Lions that season, catching 97 passes for 1,432 yards, and six touchdowns. Simply put, Robinson makes quarterbacks better and it’s only a matter of time before Trubisky is next.

  • As someone who enjoys spring, I almost feel guilty wanting to fast forward to the summer and Bears training camp … but I really want to see what Robinson will look like going up against Kyle Fuller in practice. Take some time to check out this interview fuller did with Lauren Screeden:
  • I fully expect that protecting Trubisky is the next offseason priority for the Bears. With that in mind, a post-free agency mock draft by Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski has Chicago taking Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson with the eighth overall pick (which I know would make many of you very happy). Mock drafts in which Nelson falls to the Bears at No. 8 are becoming fewer and more far between after his impressive performance at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Still, Sobleski believes that being a guard will drop Nelson’s stock enough to where he falls into the Bears’ laps.
  • Since the first wave of free agency passed without the Bears making a move to bulk up the group of starting offensive line, improvements will have to come via the draft. This class seems to have some good fits for Chicago, should they go hunting for value outside of the first round. Keep in mind the Bears have taken an offensive lineman in each of the last three drafts, but none have been first-round picks. In fact, the team has taken a late-round flier on a lineman in two of GM Ryan Pace’s three drafts. History could repeat itself in 2018.
  • You wouldn’t expect teams looking for receiving help to have an interest in ex-Bears, but the Indianapolis Colts apparently aren’t concerned. In addition to hosting restricted free agent Cameron Meredith on a visit Tuesday, ESPN’s Field Yates tweets Dontrelle Inman has also visited Indianapolis. The Colts aren’t the only team looking at Inman, as Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Inman was among the second tier of players the Dallas Cowboys are sorting through. While a decision hasn’t been made regarding Dez Bryant’s future, the Cowboys have tried to be aggressive in addressing the position, but ultimately struck out on Sammy Watkins.
  • Maybe the Colts just have a thing for the Bears or their former players. The team announced it signed offensive lineman Matt Slauson, who spent the last two years with the Chargers after he spent three seasons in Chicago from 2013-15. For what it’s worth, Ballard and Slauson just missed crossing paths in Chicago. Ballard’s final year with the Bears was in 2012 when he was the team’s Director of Pro Scouting before becoming the Kansas City Chiefs’ Director of Player Personnel in 2013.
  • The Green Bay Packers have lost a member of their starting secondary to free agency once again, as NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported safety Morgan Burnett signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Burnett could join fellow safety Micah Hyde and cornerback Casey Hayward as ex-Packers who continue being productive defensive backs after departing Green Bay.
  • Detroit has added another significant piece to its offense via free agency with the signing of tight end Luke Willson, according to NFL insider Adam Caplan. Willson is a life-long Lions fan who says playing for his favorite team growing up is a dream come true.
