Debating Trubisky’s Readiness, Wims’ Big Plays, White’s Double-Move, and Other Bullets

Mondays can be a drag, but knowing that this is the final Monday of the preseason will certainly help get us through it.

  • The Chicago Bears’ starters will get an extended period of downtime, because Head Coach Matt Nagy decided not to play them on Saturday and will keep them out of action again for Thursday’s exhibition finale against the Buffalo Bills. It will add up to 22 days between game action for Bears starters, which is a significant amount of down-time. But it should also provide ample opportunity for players to heal up before we begin any games of consequence.
  • Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune wonders if Mitch Trubisky has had enough time to show he’s ready for Week 1. Nagy seems to think QB1 is ready to go after his two-game preseason stint. Because no one has a crystal ball that can peer into the future, I’m not sure anyone can tell you if Trubisky is actually prepared to take on the Packers. But at least the coach has a reasonable explanation in why he is acting with such conviction in what has been a polarizing decision.
  • What we do know is that the Bears (1) started OTAs earlier than most other teams because they hired a new head coach, (2) started training camp before 30 of the other 31 teams in the league because they appeared in the Hall of Fame Game, and (3) will have played five preseason games in total. I suppose that, in theory, the Bears could have found some good use for this extra practice time to the point where the 30-something preseason snaps that first-unit would have taken won’t matter.
  • And unlike last year, Trubisky isn’t splitting first-team reps with anyone. In fact, having three quarterbacks instead of four has allowed for the reps to be spread in a more efficient manner throughout the offseason. But still … a small part of me wishes the Bears could have had another signal caller working throughout camp for developmental purposes.
  • One player I’m convinced doesn’t need the reps is running back Jordan Howard. In fact, I’m totally for easing running backs into the preseason. Howard takes a ton of contact and the Bears are better off ensuring his health before the regular season begins.
  • Speaking of Howard and taking contact, check out how productive he has been while running left after taking contact:
  • A panel of analysts at CBS Sports talked about the importance of Nagy reiterating that Howard will be a three-down back for the Bears this year. It’s a video that could be just what you need to push you toward drafting Chicago’s leading rusher in your upcoming fantasy draft. If Howard is truly past the issues as a receiver that limited his upside, then he and the Bears are in for some good times ahead.
  • We got to see a fair amount of Kevin White on Saturday and figure to see more of him on Thursday. As far as I’m concerned, what he did to create separation here against Kansas City is something I’d like to see more of moving forward:
  • I can’t get enough of Javon Wims’ touchdown catch (and overall play) on Saturday, so I have no problem sharing it from another angle:

  • Not sure what I like seeing less: Rashaad Coward getting beat off the edge or the uncertainty of not knowing what’s going to be a penalty for hitting a quarterback moving forward:
  • Remember, friendly fire ended Leonard Floyd’s season in 2017 … so let’s avoid this (if possible):
  • Chicago started on the road toward trimming its roster to 53 by releasing offensive lineman Earl Watford. The move could help open up a starting role for rookie James Daniels, according to Bears Radio sideline reporter Mark Grote.
  • If the Bears’ defense is up to the challenge in Week 2, we’ll be seeing plenty of this guy:
