Anthony Miller is Having an Awesome Weekend and Other Bullets

I’m having late breakfast with a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, and this cold brew is doing wonders. We can add this to the list of things that Brett vouches for and is absolutely right about.

  • Anthony Miller is front and center at the NFLPA’s rookie premier…
  • And while he’s out there representing the Bears, he met someone who brought the kind of energy we hope Miller can bring to Chicago:
  • It’s really good to see Miller at the forefront of this NFLPA rookie event. It’s obviously going to be a great event for him to learn some ins and outs of the game upon his arrival into the NFL. But it’s also something of a tip of the cap to the Bears for drafting a player worthy of inclusion for this event. I have an overwhelming feeling that Miller’s play (and his attitude) will fit right in with Chicago.
  • While Miller receives a ton of attention after the Bears moved into the second round to draft him, I still find myself intrigued by Javon Wims. And it’s great to hear that the big-bodied receiver is confident in his abilities:
  • Wims has size, speed, and athleticism, plus he was Georgia’s leader in catches, receiving yards, and reception touchdowns. That’s even more impressive than you might think, especially when you consider that he was catching passes from a true freshman quarterback last year. Wims has quite the task ahead if he wants to make the season-opening 53-man roster, and I’ll be curious to see how he goes about making the climb.
  • I found this pre-draft piece by Ryan O’Halloran at Jacksonville.com detailing Wims’ road to the NFL to be interesting. It’s a nice reminder that there is no one path to success.
  • For what it’s worth: Roquan Smith is one of 76 draft picks who have yet to sign their rookie deal, according to Pro Football Talk’s Curtis Crabtree. Not that we’re worried about it. We’re just pointing it out. That’s all.
  • As Illinois angles to get its act together as gambling comes to sports, I felt the need to share a link to a letter to Da Bears Blog editor Jeff Hughes from a reader/gambling expert. Trying to share a range of reactions to help inform our readers regarding this new law is a priority for me because there is a lot of stuff that just needs to be talked through. Not that we’ll become a gambling site, but having a greater understanding of a newsworthy item that’s making news right now isn’t a bad thing.
  • So with that in mind, we have a smooth transition to Mike Florio’s latest over at Pro Football Talk, as he believes this new referendum could bring life to the NFL pushing for an 18-game regular season schedule. The twist here from Florio would be an 18-game schedule in which players can only play a max of 18 games. It would bring some added strategy to roster building, drafting, and could maybe help ease injury issues that plague the league. This isn’t a completely new idea, as agent Don Yee offered it up back in 2011. And while it might have felt far-fetched at the time, I can see the NFL and NFLPA getting creative should the 18-game schedule become a reality.
  • Sincerest congratulations to David Kaplan on earning his spot in the WGN Radio Hall of Fame:
  • Thinking back on having listened to Kaplan and Tom Waddle once upon a time on AM-720 brings back fond memories.
