FanGraphs Statistics... does anyone here use them?
Posted 25 April 2012 - 09:12 AM
I have written some automated programming that takes the stats from FanGraphs pages (which I export into Excel), then imports into a database and maniupulates for creating results for the prop bets that I am involved in. I have automated this process in order to reduce my manual effort, as well as to improve accuracy. Because FanGraphs is working differently than I would expect, it's causing me some grief, extra work and potentially creating statistical errors.
FanGraphs apparently does something kind'a "screwy" when a player is traded. For instance, Marlon Byrd. Now that he is no longer a Cub, he shows up in the stats with a team of "- - -". My program is looking at Cubs stats, and accumulating on several categories, however, now that Byrd is no longer a Cub, his stats have dropped off my radar. I also see that he is not showing up for the Red Sox, either.
Does anyone have any idea why FanGraphs does this? It appears that Byrd's stats for both Cubs and Red Sox are now combined. Is there anyway that I can get those stats segregated by team? At this point, the only way I can come up with the stats I am looking for is to use Byrd's pre-trade stats, which I foruntately saved. With this method, I DO have a method of getting what I need, however my fear is that somehow my stats are going to miss other player stats, or even be overstated for instance with Michael Bowden. Bowden is opposite of Byrd, and more complicated... I need to issolate his stats so that his post-Sox stats count, but pre-Cubs do not.
Hopefully I'm explaining this well enough... basically, in MY opinion, FanGraphs should have multiple records for the players like Byrd and Bowden... If Byrd had a record for his Cubs stats, and one for his Sox stats, I would be all set. The "- - -" stats, just don't tell me enough.
Doesn anyone know of other stat services that offer similar free stats that can be exported like FanGraphs, which might handle player moves more efficiently?
Thanks in advance for any help!
