crype(adj., noun)- 1. A once hyped Chicago Cub prospect that turns out to be crap. EX. "Tyler Colvin looks more and more like he might be crype"

The third son of Howard and Marion Cunningham(older brother Chuck disappeared, other brother Richie had moderate basketball success)...Okay, I forget I am older than most of you guys and many wouldn't get a "Happy Days" referrence, so back to another total piece of crype.

Earl Cunningham was drafted in the 1st round in 1989, 8th overall, one pick after the White Sox took (ahem) Frank Thomas. Their careers took slightly different paths after that. But now, a little about Earl:

- the Cubs, not afraid of type casting, took another right handed power hitting outfielder...who struck out a lot.
- Earl never advanced passed A ball in 8 ML seasons.
- First three years at Peoria strike out totals of 108, 145 and 152(disrespectively). His averages: .216, .239, and .196
- some minor league career numbers: he whiffed every 3.3 at bats, and he hit .233 for his 8 year career.
- Baseball America ranked him in their top 100...twice..#44, and #89

All in all, a very bad career for such a high pick. The 1989 Draft was not very deep however, and none of the players selected before BIG Frank did much either. However there were still some guys better than Earl picked after him: Mo Vaughn, Charles Johnson, Todd Jones, and Chuck Knoblauch.

Current Chicago Crype Roster:

Cunningham, Earl
Griffin, TY
Harvey, Ryan
Kieschnick, Brooks
Scott, Gary
