The Marshall deal might not look good at first look, but Marshall is actually pitching as bad as Marmol right now, his ERA is higher than Marmol's. If the Cubs had kept a struggling Marshall, we'd be looking at a team stuck with a struggling lefty that would have been an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. Which means anything that Sappelt, Torreyes, or Wood contributes past this year is a positive gain for the Cubs while saving a few million dollars.
With Travis Wood in AAA and the bullpen a mess that Marshall deal isn't looking so great right now
This is way too early in the season to be judging a reliever's performance off their ERA. He had one bad outing against the Giants, but overall has converted 5-6 saves which is a hell lot more than what I can say for Marmol.
