Cubs’ Minor League Daily: Better Hurry

The major league baseball season still has over a month to go, but the minor league season does not. The final date of the regular season varies slightly depending on the league, but in general you can expect teams to wrap up their season in the last week of August and the first week of September. The exceptions, of course, are the playoff bound teams. Arizona and Boise are both likely to make the playoffs (barring some horrible collapse), and Tennessee still has a small chance of joining them in the postseason, but that is it for the Cubs farm system. That means you are just about out of opportunities to watch the future of the Cubs play. If you want to see any of those prospects you’ve been reading about in action, plan your trip and buy your tickets now.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – The Cubs celebrated their return from out West with a 3-2 win over the Cardinals.
Tennessee – Tennessee took the 2-1 win in a game that was called after five and a half innings.
Daytona – The Daytona Cubs suffered yet another postponement due to unplayable field conditions. Weather permitting, they’ll attempt a doubleheader today.
Peoria – The Chiefs used a five run seventh to power their way to a 9-2 win.
Boise – The Hawks overcame three errors to easily win this one by a final of 8-2.
Arizona – The AZL Cubs game was postponed due to rain.

Performances of the Day

  • [Iowa] Ryan Rowland-Smith allowed one run to score via a solo homer as he struck out six over five innings. Blake Parker, Marcus Hatley, and Jairo Asencio held on to give Rowland-Smith his third win.
  • [Iowa] Dave Sappelt homered again. His two run shot was the big blow for the Cubs’ offense in this one.
  • [Tennessee] Austin Kirk scattered three hits and three walks across five innings while striking out three in his first Double A start.
  • [Tennessee] Junior Lake doubled twice in two at bats. Matthew Szczur and Justin Bour also doubled to lead the Smokies’ attack.
  • [Peoria] Michael Jensen gave up just three hits over five innings while striking out seven in one of his better starts this season.
  • [Peoria] Jorge Soler found his swing. He finished this game 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and a stolen base.
  • [Peoria] Zeke DeVoss walked four times and stole his 35th base in this game. He now possess a season BB% of 13.7% and an OBP of .374.
  • [Boise] Jose Arias pitched the first five innings, allowed a single hit and struck out five. Hayden Simpson pitched the final four innings and also allowed a single hit (a home run) and struck out five. It was the fourth win for Arias and the second save for Simpson.
  • [Boise] Rock Shoulders hit a grand slam in the third inning for his ninth home run of the season.
  • [Boise] Stephen Bruno walked, tripled, and had three hits in this game. Marco Hernandez had two hits, and Gioskar Amaya scored three times
  • Other Minor League Notes

  • Boise is starting to put the division away. They are two games into their long trip now, and they have won both of them. The Hawks are now six games ahead of second place Yakima.
  • Speaking of playoffs, things are coming down to the wire for Tennessee. The Cubs affiliate trails first place Chattanooga by seven games, but they start a five game series against that team at home today. If the Smokies can sweep, they can put the division race on a whole new footing.
