Well, to be fair, Castro's 22, and LaHair is 29. Castro is more likely to improve. LaHair's defense, to me, looks weak at first. And I'm being charitable because I like him.
How come we talk about defense being learned and something that improves when we discuss Castro--at perhaps the premier defensive position in the game--but naysayers talk about LaHair's defense? His defense isn't bad. Especially in relation to a Cubs team that continues to put Soriano in left field, despite Alfonso lacking almost all of LaHair's production.
Sure, but Soriano is 37 and they still work with him. And let's be real, Soriano would be horrifying at 1B. I have a hard time believing a 29 year-old who can handle 1B would struggle in LF any more than ancient 'Fonso in LF.
And I say that knowing Soriano's defense this year is better than at any time I've seen him in a Cubs uniform.
I just think LaHair is getting a bad rap. Even in the minors, when he played 1B or OF his defense was at least adequate. Not great, but no worse than some current MLers.
