I know he's had some setbacks, but getting a talent like Rendon would be a steal in exchange for Soto at this point.

That would be a bad trade. Rendon doesn't look like he'll ever be healthy.
Aside from the injury, Washington told Boston that they were going to address the catching situation internally. That could mean just that, or it could mean that they don't like Boston's catchers. Either way, it doesn't look like a match anymore.
