With Sam Bradford serving as the Arizona Cardinals’ starting quarterback/bridge from the Carson Palmer era and Josh Rosen waiting in the wings, Mike Glennon – who signed a two-year deal with Arizona in the offseason – is the team’s third-string quarterback.
Among Glennon’s roles as the team’s third-string quarterback is to run some scout team offense. Which means Glennon was playing the role of Mitch Trubisky on the Cardinals’ scout team offense, nearly one year after Trubisky replaced him in the Chicago Bears’ starting lineup last October. Awkward.
“Mike has been great – he’s a pro’s pro,” said Cardinals Head Coach Steve Wilks, via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “When you go back and look at what we had when we first got here, we didn’t have a quarterback on the roster. To get him, as well as Sam, was a major plus. You didn’t know how the draft was gonna go. We were very fortunate to get Rosen.”
The Arizona experience must feel like déjà vu all over again for Glennon. In 2015, Glennon was bumped out of his starting role in Tampa Bay when the Buccaneers chose Jameis Winston with the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Two years later, Glennon appeared to be getting a new lease on life as a starting quarterback in the NFL when the Bears made a significant commitment in free agency. But after four turnover-plagued weeks and John Fox’s hot seat getting toasty, Glennon was benched in favor of top draft pick Mitch Trubisky.
It’s probably not what Glennon had in mind when he signed in Arizona, but it’s apparently something he is taking in stride. And in a football world where players are willing to walk away when things don’t go as planned, Glennon continues to hold on, wait his turn, and cash those weekly NFL pay checks.
