Mitch Trubisky’s 354-yard, six-touchdown performance is finally starting to get its due.
Even though the Bears young QB was edged by former roommate Jared Goff for the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week, it was he who brought home the hardware as the FedEx’s Air Player of the Week. Oh, I love democracy.
Trubisky completed 73.1 percent of his passes, threw for 350+ yards, and six touchdowns on Sunday, which totally looks like the type of stat line that would be worthy of being named the “Air Player of the Week.” And the timing could not have been any better. Trubisky was on the ropes entering Week 4. His accuracy wasn’t anywhere near where it was expected to be, the inability to connect on passes down the field was a concern, there were mechanical issues mucking everything up, and the Bears offense wasn’t producing touchdowns – even as it moved the ball down the field and was constantly winning the time of possession battle early in the season. As we now know, none of those concerns popped up in Week 4.
The mechanics were fine, the accuracy on short and deep passes was there, and the points lit up the Soldier Field scoreboard in a way the Bears have never seen from their quarterback (at least, recently). Trubisky’s performance looked less like a fluke and more like a building block or stepping stone for a guy who had flashed here and there, but never put it together for an entire game. It was great to see and it’s even better that his performance is being acknowledged by the voting public.
And for good measure, FedEx will donate $2,000 to United Services Organizations in Trubisky’s name through the FedEx Cares program. Certainly, a nice touch.
