Cubs’ Minor League Daily: More Streaking

Stephen Bruno now has a 22 game hitting streak for the Boise Hawks. That is an impressive accomplishment by itself, but some may argue that Bruno’s achievement was more a touch difficult than the typical 22 game hitting streak. Unlike most players who are a major part of their team’s offense, Bruno has no fixed position. He has put together this streak while playing a little bit of everything as a regular utility player.

Unfortunately, Bruno was also hit by a pitch in yesterday’s game. He came back to play defense in the following inning, but was pulled before that inning was over. I do not yet know if he was injured by the pitch or if his removal from the game was purely precautionary.

Bruno was drafted in the middle rounds by the Cubs this June and so far he has been one of the players who has performed well above expectations. There are lot of numbers to like with this guy; he will be someone we keep a close eye on next season.

Scores From Yesterday

Tennessee – Pensacola scored in the bottom of the ninth to beat Tennessee 3-2.
Daytona – Daytona opened the game with a long ball and never looked back. They won by a final of 4-2.
Peoria – The Chief’s stumbled in the sixth and lost to Kane County 6-5.
Boise – The Hawks overcame a six run deficit to win 12-11.

Performances of the Day

  • [Tennessee] Logan Watkins hit his seventh home run and stole his 28th base for the Smokies. Darwin Barney best watch his tail feathers. By the end of 2013, Watkins will be gunning for Barney’s job.
  • [Tennessee] Matthew Szczur doubled as part of his two hit night.
  • [Daytona] John Andreoli waited until the next to last day of his season to do it, but he finally has a home run. In addition to his lead off shot in the first, he also stole two more bases and raised his season total to 55.
  • [Daytona] Christian Villanueva also had two stolen bases for Daytona. He now has 14 on the season, five of them as a Cub.
  • [Daytona] Matt Loosen ended his season on a high note. He allowed just one run on two hits in his five innings of work while striking out six.
  • [Peoria] Chadd Krist doubled twice and scored twice to lead the Chiefs’ offense.
  • [Peoria] With two more walks in this game, Peoria’s Jacob Rogers has 17 BB in Low A versus just 13 strikeouts at that level.
  • [Boise] Brian Smith struck out four over three hitless innings in relief.
  • [Boise] Marco Hernandez, batting second, went 4 for 6 in this contest. Gioskar Amaya, the leadoff hitter, was 2 for 4 with two walks, a double, and a triple. When the top two hitters in the order are getting on base at that rate, it is no wonder the team is able to score twelve times.
  • [Boise] Daniel Vogelbach, Albert Almora, and Rock Shoulders also had multi-hit nights.
  • Other Minor League Notes

  • There is a somewhat positive note regarding the Iowa Cubs and their disappointing season; Iowa was actually one of the youngest teams in the Pacific Coast League. The Iowa offense finished the year with a cumulative average age of 26.5, making them the fourth youngest team in the PCL.
