Why does Valbuena bat so low?

30 May 2013 - 10:44 PM

New to the forums, so sorry if this has already been discussed and discarded.

But I am legitimately interested, why does Valbuena continue to hit so low in the order? Specifically, why isn't he hitting second?

I don't mean to turn this into Castro bashing or anything, but it seems Valbuena would be a far better choice. Castro doesn't walk, doesn't hit for power, and doesn't steal bases. And right now he doesn't even hit for average (although we might expect that to change).

I realize Valbuena is probably due for some regression, but he's arguably been one of the Cubs' best hitters this year (which is a bit hard to type without wincing).

I know the FO is all about building value. Do they believe he'd falter by getting more plate appearances (hurting any value he may have)?

Does the fact that he's a lefty play into it at all (since it'd be two lefties back-to-back at the top of the order)?

Or would it simply be a matter of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? Is it just optimal to get Castro those PAs in what's essentialy a lost season?
