#6334 Rumors and the sites that report them

Posted by MichiganGoat on 21 January 2012 - 01:50 PM

I've never used Twitter. I just can't bring myself to do it! This site is starting to pull me in that direction, but I haven't given in yet!

Tell me - won't I get all the Twitter news on here within a day anyhow?

I dunno - I am still fighting the urge.

DO IT, join the addiction

Brett frequently posts stuff on there you won't get on the site and then there are the rest of us that frequently reports other news.

And if you like beer you'll love my tweets... DO IT

#6329 Rumors and the sites that report them

Posted by MichiganGoat on 21 January 2012 - 01:22 PM

So a poster reported a rumor he read on another site that said Dempster for Phil Hughes was being reported on the interweb. So many of us jumped on the report and discussed the merits of such a trade and the merits of the blog that reported the rumor.

In short, the rumor came from a site that regularly reports anything that is floating around the web, without any links to said rumor, and is rarely correct.

So it had me thinking about how we deal with all the information that floats around the net and how BleacherNation plays in this market.

I see BleacherNation as THE premier independent site for Cubs news and rumors. Brett has created a site that carefully and ethically reports the information he has heard and then craft wonderful commentary about that information. However there are many sites that are just dreaming of being as connected as BleacherNation has become, but it does not mean that these sites have no value.

Each site has its own purpose and place and what I love about BleacherNation is that it has become a place where those reports can be discussed and eventually even dismissed. I like that posters want to report what they are reading on other sites and then then we fellow posters can use our network to confirm, deny, and discuss the report, but there are some basic guidelines that can be used when shuffling through the interweb looking at Cub sites.
  • Sites that don't link their reports to other news sites or aren't connected to major news sites should not be trusted or at least read with educated caution
  • A site that just list rumors without discussing the merits of that rumor are suspect. Anyone can collect information, but it is the commentary of that information that makes a site useful and builds discussion.
  • Information that sounds amazing or too good to be true and is not reported by any other site should not be believed.
  • A independent site with an administrator that does not reply to your inquiries means that the administrator does not have anything else to report.
With all this said, I am not advocating that we should ignore these sites, or post questions about them on the main board or here on the message board. Having discussions about unsubstantiated rumors has merit. It helps us further understand the value of players, the nature of trade rumors, and informs us about how to use the web to get news and information.

NOTE: I am not bashing any site here and believe they all have a purpose, but wanted to start a discussion about how we use the web to inform us about Cubs news and information.

Basically I'm curious how everyone navigates through the murk of the internet and especially the plethora of sports new and rumor sites.

Don't celebrate yet folks, but the fact he has informed us that Garza will not be traded is a good start. If he continues to post good comments I'll be sure to reply to see if an intelligent response continues. But I'm glad that he finally "respected my authority" (in my best Cartmen).

This was just my last ditch effort to see of he'd snap and do something to get banned... But my gambit didn't work.

Sure, but I'd prefer "On this day in dirty puppetry" but Cub facts are always fun.

#5126 All This Anger on the BN Website...

Posted by MichiganGoat on 22 December 2011 - 01:00 AM

I know and that is unfortunate because there are some really good posters over there. It is literally four guys that are mucking it up. You were right, bn (betternews) seems sober or something tonight. It is these new idiots. The thing that really hacks me off about JeffL is that he talks like he has been a regular poster.

I know it selfish but it's the attitude of the newbies as experts and those of us that have been around since BN was a small hobby for Brett being viewed as idiots that irks me the most. It's as if the BNV dont know who we are and how much we've contributed and a first timer gets to see JeffL talking about me being an uninformed homer. It's just ridiculous, but I knew this would happen and at least here on the message board my status as Bleacher Hero and my 1000+ post can be seen. Oh well just being selfish and a little drunk... I need school to restart. *** see that perfect use of the ellipsis point ***

Until playoffs are put in place this will always be a popularity contest and the big conference big boys will always be favored. This is why college football is low on my list of sports I care about, no definitive championship.

#4242 Boston Has A Manager

Cherrington has to realize he is now fourth in the decision making order:
Henry to Larry Lou to BobbyV to Cherington.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ben is gone by next year unless the Sox go deep in the playoff.

#3515 Thoughts on Mike Maddux?

Posted by MichiganGoat on 03 November 2011 - 05:37 AM

In Theo I trust.

I have no idea what really makes a great manager, especially when it comes to winning a World Series. When you look over the last 20 year winning managers you see some impressive names (Torre, Leyland, Francona, Cox, La **cough cough** Russa). But the question for me has always been: Are these teams winning because of their managers OR are the manager winning because of their team?

I expect its a combination of the both expect in the case of the Cardinals (RAGE BUILDING) who obviously sold Theriot's soul for a WS championship. I believe Theo will find a manager that shares his and Jed's plan and will work in unison with the front office.

So to answer you question about Mike Maddux... I have no idea. In Theo I trust.
