In Topic: Chicago Cubs 2013 starting rotation

I love Dempster as much as anyone but I want this to be his last days with the Cubs. The cubs are going young and I agree with you keeping Garza and signing him to a 5 yr 80 million extension(if no one gives up what the front office is asking for.) I think the rest of the money should go toward a 3 year deal for McCarthy or a 4 year deal for Anibal Sanchez. If either one of them can not be had get a pitcher who is coming off a bad year but has had previously good ones such as Ervin Santana , he will not be picked up by the Angels and he could probably be had on a 2 yr or a 1 yr with a club option like Maholm for 6-8 million. Then we could always swap him for some prospects at the trade deadline if the cubs are out of it. Rotation: Garza (I dont think he will be traded, no one is offering enough for him), McCarthy or Anibal Sanchez,Shark, Wood, Maholm. If Anibal or McCarthy get too expensive or if we do get a great haul and deal Garza sign Santana.

I'm not a fan of BJ Upton but with the way he is playing this year he is playing his way into a very affordable 3 year deal @ around 12 million per season. That would be a fun team to watch next year I just don't see a way the cubs can get Justin Upton without giving up Castro. Maybe Baez,Szczur, Barney, and a prospect we get from the Dempster trade but teams would be offering more. I just dont see it happening since Were trying to build up the farm not gut it for a player that is known to have attitude problems.

I just don't understand how some of these teams that are 5 games or less back from a wild card spot would not want to go for it this year. I mean look at the Blue Jays at the end of the year they will probably lose Edwin and others. I understand certain prospects to be off limits if your the Blue Jays (Travis D'Arnaud and Gose) but they have enough to make a great offer for Garza: Syndergaard,Nicolino, and Adonys Cardona. The same for the Red sox. Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part but it looks like a win/win for both teams.

I think a lot depends on the next month how active the cubs will be during free agency, if they get what they want and trade Garza I don't see any big free agent signings maybe a Cody Ross, and a couple 1-2 year deals on pitchers (Bedard,Ervin Santana) something along those types that the cubs can flip at the trade deadline and pick up some more top 15-20ish prospects of a team. If the cubs did that again next year along with another top 5 draft pick they could have a top 5 farm system. Then the fun would begin.

Only reason I said Ross is he seems like the type of guy that Theo will sign. I said we should keep both Dejesus and Ross. This would let Jackson stay in the minors for another year and try to work on his strikeouts.
