Who Knows Where This Goes: Tigers Ready to “Spend Big” to Keep Max Scherzer

MLB News and Rumors

Were it not the heat of the Winter Meetings, with craziness and misinformation at every turn, I’d probably spend a great deal more time breaking down the implications of this otherwise very simple tweet from Buster Olney:

For now, I just think it’s very interesting to muse on:

  • The timing is at once surprising (Scherzer is not expected to get serious about signing until much later in the offseason) and not surprising (the heat is obviously building, and, in particular, the White Sox have gotten very aggressive about improving for 2015). The Tigers tried to extend Scherzer before the season at six years and $144 million, and Scherzer declined.
  • The presumption is that the Tigers would deal one of Price or Rick Porcello before re-signing Scherzer. If they want to keep Price, then they’re very serious about 2015, in particular, and you might see an uptick in the Porcello rumors. Or maybe they keep them all, and just throw all caution to the wind.
  • If Scherzer does wind up going back to Detroit, then the Lester losers have one fewer top arm to try and get this offseason (and maybe two, if the Tigers keep Price).
  • Does this mean the Scherzer market is about to tick up? And if the money gets crazy very quickly, does that impact the Lester talks? Probably not, but if there’s a sense that maybe Scherzer will start listening now, might Lester’s agents not want to hear what teams are saying?
