Report: Each of Cubs and Giants Believe They Have a Deal with Eddy Julio Martinez

Chicago Cubs Rumors

cuba featureAmid the twists and turns and twists and turns in the story of Cuban outfield prospect Eddy Julio Martinez, a working theory emerged for how the Cubs could reportedly have a deal at $3 million while the Giants say things aren’t quite resolved after previously possibly having a deal at $2.5 million: maybe they both believe they have a deal.

That is to say, I wondered this a couple days ago: “the Giants perhaps believe they already had a done deal, and may try to somehow finalize it.”

Jon Heyman today reports that’s pretty much exactly what’s going on. You can read Heyman’s piece for more of the particulars, but the gist is that the Giants thought they had a deal at $2.5 million, but it wasn’t clear whether that was actually a done deal, because it seems Martinez has multiple persons negotiating on his behalf. So, then, the Cubs also thought they had a deal at $3 million with whomever they were speaking after the Giants “deal” was done.

Heyman believes this will be resolved by MLB soon. What a crazy story this has become.

If the Cubs can get Martinez inked, he’ll immediately become one of the better prospects in an already-deep system, though it’s unclear just how significant of a prospect he is. Opinions on the matter vary widely.
