Happy birthday, America!
If we’re comfortable assuming that Kris Bryant is going to be OK (and it sounds like he will be), then we can say that today’s game went exactly as Cubs fans would have hoped. You can lament that the Cubs “can’t beat good teams” – a specious concern as it is – but the wins all count at the end of the year. Winning these ones against the Reds help get the Cubs into the playoffs.
Kyle Hendricks wasn’t as efficient as you might like to see after the bullpen has been taxed lately, but he was certainly effective. From there, only Travis Wood had a dodgy outing coming out of the pen, but, given the Cubs’ huge lead, you can deal with it.
That huge lead was built on the strength of some finally timely hitting, some homers, and some Reds errors. Plenty of good games up and down the lineup, and it’s fair to wonder if Jason Heyward, who also had a good game, will be down in the order for a while now, or if he’ll be right back up in the two-hole soon, especially if Bryant misses some time.
In any case, this was a good one. Time to go enjoy some friends, family, and fireworks.
