The Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros last night, but it wasn’t necessarily on the strength of an offensive explosion. Seems like it’s been a while for one of those. Maybe today, with this group?
Chicago Cubs Lineup v. Houston Astros (Collin McHugh):
- Dexter Fowler, CF
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Jorge Soler, LF
- Miguel Montero, DH
- Willson Contreras, C
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Javy Baez, SS
- Tommy La Stella, 2B
A mix-and-match crew there if I’ve ever seen one. There’s no clear platoon advantaging going on, which makes sense, as Astros starter Collin McHugh doesn’t really have a split in his career (and has been beat up equally by righties and lefties this year).
So Miguel Montero gets a DH opportunity, and Willson Contreras goes behind the plate for John Lackey.
Jorge Soler stays in the lineup, but heads out to left field. Tommy La Stella subs for Ben Zobrist at second base, and Javy Baez subs for Addison Russell at shortstop.
You could say that this lineup has as many as four “bench” guys filling in, and yet it still looks like a pretty good, normal lineup. Depth, for the win.
We’ll have a full Pre-Gamin’ for you closer to game time.
