Pre-Gamin’: Cubs at Red Sox (6:10 CT) – Lineup, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Tonight, the Chicago Cubs head to the only stadium older (by two years!) than Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, to take on the Boston Red Sox.

There, they’ll be playing in the first of a highly anticipated (for a number of reasons) three-game series that’ll take us through Sunday and hopefully feature some flag-raising wins.

Starting on the mound for the Cubs tonight is right-hander, Jake Arrieta.

Although his results haven’t quite been their usually dominant self just yet (3.65 ERA), there are some other, really nice things to point out. For one, his strikeout rate (29.3%) and walk rate (5.1%) are both better than he’s ever posted in his time with the Cubs. Obviously it’s a much smaller sample here through just the first four games, but given his huge drop in K/BB last year, that is very heartening to see.

  • 2014: 4.07 K/BB
  • 2015: 4.92 K/BB
  • 2016: 2.50 K/BB
  • 2017: 5.80 K/BB (Through first four starts)

Opposing Arrieta and the Cubs is Red Sox lefty, Drew Pomeranz. Pomeranz has only tossed 15.2 IP through his first three starts of the year and has acheived mixed results. While his ERA is quite high (4.60), his xFIP is almost a run and a half lower (3.12). His 29.3% ground ball rate is startlingly low, though, and when combined with a high HR/FB ratio, these things start to make some sense. Let’s see if the Cubs can continue to elevate the ball as others have against Pomeranz all year.

American Leauge rules mean Kyle Schwarber is DHing, and we get Javy Baez, Jayson Heyward, Albert Almora, Ben Zobrist, and a Contreras/Arrieta battery all in one night … against the Red Sox … at Fenway! So awesome. Let’s go.
