Addison Russell Dealing With Foot Injury, DL Stint Possible (UPDATE: Yup, DL – Zastryzny Up)

Chicago Cubs News

If you noticed Addison Russell out of the lineup on back-to-back days, you probably wondered if it was injury-related. That bum shoulder that has cost him a few games this year acting up again?

Well, yes, it’s an injury, but it’s not the shoulder:

As Rogers says, it’s actually a foot issue for Russell, and it could lead to a disabled list stint. I’d imagine we’ll get more on this soon.

Javy Baez is a more than capable fill-in for Russell in the interim, but obviously you’d rather not be without Russell, who remains one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball, and who’d finally started to consistently rip the ball after a very slow first half.

UPDATE: Well, crap. It’s a significant enough injury for Russell that the Cubs are making a move:

Hopefully Russell will miss only the minimum 10 days.

In his place, the Cubs supplement a used-up bullpen with lefty Rob Zastryzny, who has himself missed much of this year with an injury. When healthy, Zastryzny showed himself to be a very nice relief option for the Cubs last year, and he could be that again here.

That said, his time with the big league team might be short, as the Cubs could boost the pen for a day or two, and then bring up a position player like Tommy La Stella for the rest of Russell’s DL stint.
