Javy Baez Leaves the Game After Contact on Slide Into Second Base (UPDATE: Blurred Vision)

Chicago Cubs Highlights, Chicago Cubs News

With Addison Russell out for a number of weeks still with his plantar fasciitis injury, Javy Baez getting hurt is currently your nightmare scenario for the Cubs.

I won’t go so far as to say that he’s seriously hurt, but he did just depart today’s game after a slide into second base on which it looked like he took a shot to the head:

Baez stayed in the game briefly, taking the field in the top of the next inning, but then he called for the trainer after one out. Appearing a bit dazed, he departed.

We will hopefully get an update soon, but Baez may sit for a bit if he was feeling concussion-like symptoms.

Recently called-up middle infielder Mike Freeman took over for Baez. You won’t lose too much with the glove with Freeman (though very few can say they are as good out there as Baez), but Freeman probably won’t provide much in the way of offense.

UPDATE: The Cubs seem to be playing it safe, but it is not necessarily a concussion situation for Baez:

Definitely better to hold Baez back and let him be evaluated further in the morning than to travel with the team. If he’s feeling worse in the morning, or concussion symptoms develop, it just seems like minimizing travel right now is a good idea. Hopefully he wakes up feeling just fine, joins the team in the morning, and is good to go for the game tomorrow afternoon.
