Cubs win! Thanks, American League rules!
It was a night for pitching on both sides, but the Cubs managed to get one more run than the Rays, who managed only a solo home run in this one. The Cubs got a solo home run from Kyle Schwarber AND a run-scoring double from Javy Baez. And that was that in the game.
Mike Montgomery was fantastic in another swing start for the Cubs, pitching into the 6th inning with a no-hitter, before Brad Miller took him deep. Montgomery finished out the 6th without any more damage, closing out a great start. Montgomery figures to swing back into the bullpen now that Jake Arrieta is returning, but he’s definitely shown us enough this year to be excited about the possibility of him finally joining the rotation for good next year.
From there, the Cubs went the expected Pedro Strop – Carl Edwards Jr. – Wade Davis trio to close things out. Davis, in particular, was freaking nasty as heck, striking out the side.
The defense was very solid for the Cubs in this one, too, overall, with nice plays throughout the evening, but the pitching starred. Just one hit, 11 Ks, and no walks. Wow.
That’s seven in a row!
