Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs Beat Angels, Bryant Returns Healthy, Baez Robbed, More

Chicago Cubs News

The Cubs pulled out a 9th inning win today, rallying for three in the 9th and topping the Angels 6-4. If it were the regular season, I’d be freaking jacked right now.

  • Kris Bryant’s first at bat post-sickness was a success:

  • Jose Quintana got in his first work of the spring, throwing a successful and clean inning, and then coming out for the second, giving up baserunners, failing to record an out, and departing. It’s all about getting those pitches in. Steve Cishek also got in a clean inning of work on the day.
  • We also got to see two of the three pitching prospects Joe Maddon has discussed, with each of Duane Underwood Jr. and David Garner pitching an inning. They looked fine, but not quite as impressive (I am #NotAScout) as the third guy Maddon mentioned, Oscar De La Cruz.
  • Kyle Schwarber tried to keep his speed showcase going, but was thrown out trying to steal second base in this one. Somewhere, Billy Hamilton breathes a sigh of relief.
  • Javy Baez got robbed:

  • Baez returned the favor with a beautiful catch of his own (watch here), and how about this great series of pictures:

  • Jason Heyward led off today, which usually means nothing in Spring Training other than having an opportunity for that guy to get an extra plate appearance if you want. But it may not have been entirely meaningless in this case:

  • There’s an implication there that Heyward is under consideration for leadoff opportunities, something he’s eschewed in the past in his career, feeling more comfortable down in the order. Who knows. Maybe this somehow helps him. If not, he will not be someone you want to see getting the most plate appearances.
  • Injury timelines for a couple Cubs who’ve been out:

  • Sounds like Brandon Morrow is being held back behind the other relievers right now, but he’s throwing live BP and will make his debut on Tuesday:

  • Rizzo doing the important things:
