Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs Win 6-1, Lester Smooth, Power Bats Show Up, More

Chicago Cubs News

Another day, another Cactus League win for the Cubs. They topped the Angels 6-1 in this one, with the bats taking advantage of a very hittable Matt Shoemaker.

Wish this was a regular season game for Jon Lester, who was comically efficient through five innings of work, and then had to go out to the bullpen to get more pitches in.

  • Jason Heyward crushed a double to left center off of Shoemaker, and I just thought I’d compare it to a similar shot from his good-power 2013 season:

  • Legs look a little more stiff, maybe? I don’t know. They look pretty similar when you consider the camera angle. He *might* be pulling off more now, or it might just be that angle.
  • Brandon Morrow gave up a run in his second inning of work for the Cubs this spring, but it was a single, steal, steal, sac fly, which, like, whatever man. Even if it weren’t Spring Training, that just happens sometimes.
  • Pitching prospect Oscar De La Cruz, who was among the cuts today, pitched the 9th inning, and it was very interesting. His mechanics – or something – looked funkily off for the first batter. Then he was doing this thing with his arm that looked like a centering/focusing mechanism. Then, for his next two batters (it was a 1-2-3 inning), he looked smooth again. I like watching him pitch. He doesn’t get many whiffs, but he’s in the zone, commands his pitches well, and avoids the barrel. Just stay healthy, dude.
  • I’m not sure what it is about Anthony Rizzo’s presence at first base that deeply freaks out pitchers, but this:

  • … has now happened twice:

  • Chris Gimenez made the old fake-pump-throw trick actually work:
