Chicago Cubs Lineup: Albert Almora Takes Over the Most Important Spot Against a Tough Righty

Cubs Lineups

The Cubs are finally back in action after a day off (aren’t those the worst?), and here’s how they’ll line up against the Cleveland Indians.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Ben Zobrist, RF
  2. Albert Almora Jr., CF
  3. Kris Bryant, 3B
  4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  5. Willson Contreras, C
  6. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  7. Javier Baez, 2B
  8. Addison Russell, SS
  9. Tyler Chatwood, P

Although stressing over the daily lineup construction is (to use Joe Maddon’s word) unsophisticated, there is the belief that the second spot in the lineup is the most important one/should be reserved for your best hitters. I have no doubt Joe Maddon knows this, not only because he’s a savvy, intelligent manager, but also because the proof is in the pudding (Kris Bryant settles in after the leadoff man most days).

Today, however, that honor goes to Albert Almora Jr., who’s been heating up nicely (alongside his teammate, Ian Happ). It’s an especially notable decision, because today’s pitcher, Trevor Bauer, is not only right-handed, but he’s been one of the better pitchers in baseball this season and has been tougher on righties for his career.

Sure, his lefty/righty splits are reversed this season, but he’s still allowing just a .196/.291/.304 slash line against righties, so Almora certainly has his work cut out for him. Then again, Almora has one hit (a single) and a walk against Bauer in four career plate appearances, so maybe history is on his side.

Elsewhere, with the exception of Jason Heyward back on the bench in favor of Ben Zobrist, there’s not much to highlight with this lineup. The regular guys are in there in front of Tyler Chatwood, and they’ll look to make it three wins in a row.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (6:05 CT).
