Chicago Cubs Game 1 Lineup: No Javy Baez Yet, But That’s OK

Cubs Lineups

The Cubs/Dodgers premier was canceled last night, but it is being made up with a doubleheader this afternoon. And here’s your lineup for Game 1.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Kris Bryant, 3B
  2. Jason Heyward, RF
  3. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  5. Ian Happ, CF
  6. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  7. Addison Russell, SS
  8. Chris Gimenez, C
  9. Tyler Chatwood, P

The Cubs lineup today for last night’s makeup is exactly the same as the one we saw yesterday, but the lack of change is actually a little meaningful.

Specifically, I’m sure many fans will notice the continued absence of Javier Baez (elbow) and assume that he’s not ready to return today as the rumors suggested he might have been. However, I’m not sure I would go there just yet.

For one, this lineup is still facing Kenta Maeda and he’s been absolutely brutal on right-handers this season. For another, this lineup was already set last night, so it could be as simple as keeping expectations in check. For another, this is part-one of a day-night double-header and that usually means some people play in one game and not the other. And finally, that last point goes double when a player is on the bubble of feeling 100%. So with a lefty, Rich Hill, starting game two tonight, my guess is that we’ll see Javier Baez on the field before the day is done.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (12:05 CT).
